Childcare Courses Melbourne: Certificate III and Diploma Pathways

Choosing between childcare courses Melbourne providers offer usually comes down to two questions: which qualification, and which cohort you are in. The Performance College runs CHC30125, the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, and CHC50125, the Diploma. Both are available to domestic students online and to international students on campus, and the four combinations are genuinely different courses. This page sorts out which one is yours. Ring 03 9008 4043 if it is still not obvious.

The Two Qualifications

CHC30125, Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. The entry qualification. It is what a job advertisement means by "a Cert III" and it qualifies you to work in a room. No prior experience required. CHC50125, Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. The level above. It is what services look for when appointing an educational leader or a centre director, and it requires a Certificate III to enter. The Diploma is not a bigger version of the Certificate III. The certificate teaches you to work with children; the diploma teaches you to design what the room is doing and to answer for it, which is a different job.

The Two Cohorts

Domestic students study online with live Zoom classes and finish in 6 to 9 months. No travel, no campus. International students study on campus at Level 5, 398 Lonsdale Street in the Melbourne CBD, over 52 weeks, under our CRICOS registration. The qualification issued is identical either way. What differs is delivery, duration and fees.

About The Performance College

We are a registered training organisation, RTO 46069, and a CRICOS registered provider, CRICOS 04180C, which places us under ASQA and the Standards for RTOs and under the ESOS framework for international students. Everything we issue is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Rekha Sehrawat founded the college in 2023, after years as a trainer and assessor watching capable students struggle for want of support rather than ability.

Since then, 100+ domestic students have graduated, out of more than 1,200 trained across all cohorts. We record 90% satisfaction in our student experience survey and hold 5 stars from 63 Google reviews.

We run one campus, in the Melbourne CBD.

Where to Go From Here

What Both Courses Ask of You in a Workplace

Every early childhood qualification includes supervised placement in a regulated children’s education and care service, and the hours differ sharply.

The Certificate III requires a minimum of 160 hours. The Diploma requires 280. The hours are counted collectively across the units carrying a workplace requirement, so they run alongside study rather than after it.

A current Working with Children Check is required before placement starts. For the Diploma you will also need a police clearance certificate no more than 12 months old, plus immunisation checks where the placement provider asks for them.

We arrange placement and have partner sites across Victoria. The assistance is included in the course fee.

Costs for Domestic Students

The Certificate III is $2,500. The Diploma is $3,500. Enrolment adds a further $250 to either.

Instalments are available monthly or quarterly, with no interest and no additional charges. The fee is simply divided.

Victoria funds subsidised and fee free training places at approved providers for students who meet the eligibility rules, and it is worth establishing where you stand before enrolling anywhere, ourselves included.

International student fees are quoted on enquiry. Email info@tpc.edu.au for current figures.

What the Work Actually Involves

Whichever course you take, the units describe the job more honestly than any prospectus. Nurturing babies and toddlers. Developing positive and respectful relationships with children. Supporting inclusion and diversity. Using an approved learning framework to guide practice. Supporting the holistic learning and development of children. Helping children connect with the natural environment.

Very little of that is supervision, which is what people expect, and most of it is development, which is what the job turns out to be. Reading the list is the fastest way to find out whether this is work you want.

The Diploma adds the layer above: curriculum design, service compliance, family partnerships, and the ethical and legal responsibilities that come with leading a program rather than working inside one.

Working Out Which One Is Yours

Two questions settle it. Do you hold a Certificate III already, and are you a domestic or an international student? Those answers point at exactly one of the four courses, and the pages above go into each in detail.

Common Questions

Which course is best for child care?

For getting in, the Certificate III. For moving up, the Diploma. The only wrong answer is starting at Diploma level without floor experience, and in any case the Certificate III is a formal entry requirement for it.

How much does the childcare course cost in Australia?

Fees vary widely between providers and funding status. For domestic students ours is $2,500 for the Certificate III. The Diploma is $3,500. Enrolment is extra. Subsidised and fee free places exist in Victoria for eligible students, which can change the answer entirely, so check your eligibility first.

How long is the childcare course in Australia?

For domestic students here, 6 to 9 months for either qualification. International students take 52 weeks. Placement scheduling is what moves the number within that range.

Where can I work afterwards?

Long day care centres, family day care, preschools, kindergartens and outside school hours care. The Diploma additionally opens educational leader and centre director roles.
