This nationally recognised qualification gives you the practical skills to support older people and people with disability in their daily lives. You will learn person-centred care approaches, communication, safety procedures and infection control, and you will do it alongside real workplace experience rather than after it.
Person-centred care is the phrase that does the most work in that list. It is the difference between doing things for someone and doing things with them, and it is what separates a competent carer from a task-completer.
Both Streams, Not One
The dual specialisation is the point of this qualification. It covers Ageing and Disability together, which means you are not committing to one side of the sector before you have worked in either.
That matters practically. People arrive certain they want aged care and discover they prefer disability support, or the reverse, and the ones who hold the dual qualification can act on it without retraining.

Face to Face Learning

Where This Qualification Takes You
Students entering the Certificate III in Individual Support at The Performance College must meet the following Assessment Suitability:
Academic Requirement
Year 12 equivalent, OR completion of a 12+ month English-medium qualification.
English Language Requirements
IELTS 6.0 or equivalent (no more than 2 years old). Alternative evidence includes 5+ years of education in an English-speaking country, 6+ months at an Australian RTO at Certificate IV level, or successful completion of an English Placement Test.
Work-Based Training
You must complete at least 120 hours of work-based training in a residential care or in-house care facility with an approved NDIS provider, as required for CHCCCS040 and other assessment requirements.
Pre-Training Review
All learners will undertake an initial skills assessment to determine suitability for the course and student needs. Determination of course suitability and additional support will be made by a qualified assessor.
Language Literacy and Numeracy
All students will be required to complete an LLN assessment prior to the onset of the course. The Performance College uses the LLN Robot platform for the assessment.
Hardware / Software Requirements
Access to a laptop or computer with Windows operating system and Microsoft Word at the learner’s own cost. Where needed, The Performance College will provide access to computers through an MoU with an external IT company.
Age Requirement
Students must be a minimum age of 18 years or above at the time of course commencement.
Core Units (15)
How You Study, and For How Long
Domestic students study online with live Zoom classes and complete the qualification in 6 to 9 months. Live means timetabled sessions with a trainer present, not a set of recordings.
International students take the 52 week version and study on campus at Level 5, 398 Lonsdale Street in the Melbourne CBD. Those intakes fall on set dates, so contact us for the current ones rather than working to a published calendar.
You will need a computer and an internet connection that will hold a video class end to end.
Work-Based Placement
The qualification requires a minimum of 120 hours of hands-on work-based training, in a residential care or in-home care facility with an approved NDIS provider. That is an assessment requirement of the qualification itself.
We arrange your placement and have partner sites across Victoria, so you are not approaching facilities on your own. Placement assistance is included in the course fee.
Around 75% of our students are already working in the field while they are still studying, and some have been offered a contract by the facility they did their placement with.
Who This Course Is For
Domestic students interested in a career in individual support, aged care or disability services. It suits people entering a new industry sector, people looking for a pathway to higher-level qualifications, and people who want hands-on skills in person-centred care.
Students are usually new entrants. Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning are available for those with existing skills and knowledge, which can shorten the timeframe.

Those roles exist across residential aged care, in-home and community services, and disability support. The qualification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework, so none of it is tied to Victoria.
Entry Requirements
You must be 18 or over at the time the course commences, and hold Year 12 or an equivalent, or a 12 month qualification completed in English.
Every student completes a language, literacy and numeracy assessment before the course begins, through the LLN Robot platform. It determines the support we put in place rather than whether you are admitted. There is also a short pre-training review and course entry interview to confirm the course suits you.
International students additionally need IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with results no more than two years old. Alternative evidence is accepted, including five or more years of education in an English-speaking country, six months or more at an Australian RTO at Certificate IV level, or a successful English placement test.
What It Costs
The course is $2,500 for domestic students. Enrolment is a further $250, and placement assistance is included in both.
Instalments are available monthly or quarterly. There is no interest and there are no additional charges; the fee is simply divided.
Victoria funds subsidised and fee free training places at approved providers for students who meet the eligibility rules. Check whether you qualify before enrolling anywhere, ourselves included. We are a fee paying provider, and the instalment plan is why the fee need not be the deciding factor.
